HISTORY
B.Sc Botany course was started in the year 1970. Department has achieved a very good academic performance during the past 47 years. Mr.Anilkumar of 1981 batch got second rank and Miss Smitha.V.Menon of 1999 batch got fifth rank in B.Sc Botany of Calicut University.
M.Sc Botany course was started in this college in January 2000.Miss Rahana .T.A. of M.Sc Botany (2001-03) secured Dr .V.V.Sivarajan memorial medal (Dept of Botany, University of Calicut) for being the top scorer in Taxonomy paper of M.Sc Botany/ Plant Science examinations of 2002.Miss Deepthi Das.K. of 2004 batch got second rank in M.Sc Botany, University of Calicut

ACTIVITES
We have conducted a one day workshop” Glimpses of Indian Medical Heritage with Special Emphasis on Herbs” on 28th January 2005.Topic presentation and audio visual demonstration was done by Prof. T. A. Panicker, formerly H.O.D. of Medicinal plants, International Institute, Coimbatore.
A seminar on” Recent Trends in Pant Propagation “was conducted on January 30th 2006.Dr.T.Surendran, Scientist,KFRI,Peechi, presented the topic.
A workshop on “Scientific Mushroom Cultivation” was conducted on 20th November 2007.Dr.Suma Poulose, Prof and Head, KVK,Thrissur demonstrated the scientific cultivation of different types of mushrooms.
Extension Activites
Kitchen garden programme (2005 onwards.)
Every year a survey was conducted by second year B.Sc students in different wards of Nattika Grama panchayath. The survey aimed at assessing the interest of the residents in developing and maintaining kitchen garden in their own premises. A questionnaire was distributed in 150 families and feed back obtained in order to select the eligible families for the purpose. 15 families were sleeted. Vegetable seeds were purchased from Olericulture Department of Agriculture University, Vellanikkara and supplied to selected 15 families. Our students gave instructions and manual help for starting and maintaining kitchen garden.
