Post Graduate Department of Zoology
Mission
Our goal is to develop our Department into a Centre of Excellence with respect to its teaching and research capabilities. 'Impart the best possible education to our students is our basic motto.
History
The Department of Zoology aims at imparting the best possible education to the students in the field of Zoology, Aquaculture and Fisheries. Started primarily as a teaching Department, we have entered into the realm of full-fledged research at the Masters levels, and conduct of major and minor projects funded by various agencies At present, we have 8 faculty members involved in the teaching of the three programmes offered namely, B.Sc. Zoology, M.Sc. Zoology with Fishery Biology and Aquaculture as special subject.

The Department of Zoology was established in the year 1970 with B.Sc. Degree Course. PG was started in 1982 with a sanctioned strength of 10 students. The built up area of this department is 873.3 square meters. At present the sanctioned strength of Under Graduate course is 36x3=108 and that of Post Graduate Course is 12x2=24. Our sanctioned teaching posts are eight and that of the technical staff are four.
The trend in success rate during the past 5 years has been an increasing one, the Department securing over 95% pass of students, with more than 80% of them passing out with first class. However during the last two years, there has been an increase in drop-outs, the students joining of Professional Courses.

Highlights of the Department
Prof. N. Sivarajan, former Head of the Department was a member of the Senate, University of Calicut. He was an advisor to the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Kerala
Prof. N.A. Das was the Chairman of the Corporation for Physically Handicapped, Govt. of Kerala.
Out of the 209 PG students appeared for examinations, 195 secured first class. There were 2 First ranks and 3 Second ranks

UGC sponsored National conference on Ornamental Fishes:
"Aqua Ornamentals 2006" a University Grants Commission Sponsored National Conference on "Ornamental Fishes" was held in Seminar Hall, Sree Narayana College, Nattika from 18th & 19th September, 2006.
Aquarium Show: "Aqua Ornamentals 2006"
As part of the giant stride towards the popularization of ornamental fish culture and aquarium keeping among the rural people, P. G. Department of Zoology organized an "AQUARIUM SHOW 2006" from 15th to 19th September 2006 at Sree Narayana College, Nattika. Irrespective of the adverse weather conditions, more than 20,000 viewers including School and College students, teachers and rural people experienced the exhibition.
Refresher Course for Higher Secondary Teachers
One day refresher course on "Newer Trends in Zoology" was organised for Higher Secondary & VHSC teachers on 26-1 0-2007. More than 70 Zoology teachers in and around Thrissur District attended the refresher course. Teaching faculty of P.G. Dept. of Zoology handled various sessions.
Medical Camp organized in association with AIMS Ernakulam
A free medical camp was organised by the Department in association with Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre (AIMS), Emakulam on 191t1 January 2008. More than 700 patients got benefit from this camp. Medicines were distributed free of cost. Telemedicine unit of AIMS conducted lab test at the camp site. Dept. of Gen. "EnviroTech 2008" a University Grants Commission Sponsored National Seminar on "Environmental Biotechnology: Challenges and Opportunities" was organized by the department on 17th & 18th September 2008.
